Make A 90s Blush Wedding Veil And Gown Trendy Again
Brides are once again drawn to the beauty of Basque waists and ball gowns so popular in the early to mid 90s. Many brides are finding this fashionable silhouette in a preservation box right in their mom’s closet and choosing to update it rather than buy anew. Katherine is one such bride.
Blush wedding gowns were a major fashion trend in the late 80s and early 90s. High-end designers created dresses in many shades of pink to step away from the tradition of bright white. Layers and overlays softened the hues to create a ballerina fairy-tale feel. With 90s styles making a comeback, why not restyle your mom’s wedding dress and veil?
Restyling Mom’s Blush Wedding Dress
Judy bought her wedding gown in 1993 at Lilli Anne Bridal in San Antonio, Texas. She instantly fell in love with its pale blush color, which flattered her light complexion. The gown was made of silk shantung with puffy sleeves, which weren’t her style, so she had them altered into tailored cap sleeves.
“Wedding dresses in colors other than white, candlelight, or ivory were not a trend at the time. The gown was hanging on a sale rack and caught my eye because it was such a beautiful shade of blush pink. The saleswoman said that many brides had tried it on because of the unique color. It had some minor wear and a lipstick stain on the inside so the dress was significantly reduced.”
“When Katherine and Layne became engaged in March of 2025, she asked about the dress. It had not been removed from the box in 25 years. She tried it on and was very happy. With an eye on budget she did not feel the need to go dress shopping for anything else.”
Katherine always knew she wanted to wear her mom’s wedding dress. She tried it on and was ready to take the next step to update it to a more current style.
“I had always planned to wear my mom’s wedding gown! Since it was blush and pink is my favorite color, I just knew it would be mine.”
Redesigning a 90s Blush Wedding Veil
Judy found a blush satin floral wreath to match her wedding dress, but once again she wanted to make alterations. The wreath was too big for her head, and the pouf on her veil was not for her. After moving to Cleveland, Ohio, she found a store that would make her a new veil and customize her headpiece into more of a bun-wrap style.
The original receipt showed the cost of downsizing her satin wreath to a bun wrap and creating a new veil with blush-colored satin bias trim and scattered pearls. This pricing seems like a bargain to me, even for 1999.
“Since the headpiece matched the dress, I decided to use it. Initially, it was too bulky. I wanted a delicate hair comb look rather than the full circlet it was. I wasn’t planning to do anything fancy with it. Originally, I was going to cut a portion of the headpiece and attach it to a comb myself. My mom did some research and discovered how intensive vintage restoration can be and decided we should find a professional.”
Judy found our Instagram through a Google search for wedding veil restoration.
“Once I knew Katherine wanted to wear my dress, we started talking about veil options. When she saw my original headpiece and veil, I could tell she didn’t love it. I found your Instagram page through Google. The more I looked at your page, saw the pictures, and read the stories, I knew that you were the right choice!”
The time it takes to deconstruct, remove glue, clean elements, and remake the vintage florals takes just as much time as designing the new bridal headpiece. My idea was to completely deconstruct the headpiece and scale down the flowers to create a soft, ethereal backstyle. Adding my signature crystal work would enhance the beauty of blush colored florals.
I discovered that the pearls on her mom’s original veil were actually blush colored freshwater pearls. I have never seen freshwater pearls glued on a wedding veil in all of my career. After successfully cleaning the glue from the pearls, I made sprigs of Swarovski crystals and blush pearls to add a gorgeous touch to the headpiece.
There were enough freshwater pearls to add to Katherine’s new custom wedding veil. She chose our popular floor-length Bregine style. Even though it would take additional time, I recommended that we hand-sew them to the veil. My work is of the highest quality, and I would never advise gluing freshwater pearls onto a wedding veil.
“If there are leftover vintage elements, I offer my brides the option of designing hairpins for their mom or sister as a keepsake. Many of my brides love this idea and the sentimental moments it provides on their wedding day. The pins I made for Katherine’s mom and sister were perfect for just that!”
