My Grandmother’s Wax Flower Wedding Crown

Many of my brides have no idea of the treasure they possess. They come to me wishing to use their grandmother’s wedding crown, not knowing the golden flowers that adorn it are made of wax.

Robyn reached out to me through Instagram just six weeks before her California wedding. Our summer 2024 production schedule was full, and I was not accepting new projects—that is, until she told me about the heirloom she possessed.

I discovered Headpiece.com somehow on Instagram. I had been searching all over for something like this but came up empty handed. Finally, Headpiece.com came up on my search page, and I reached out to Marie. It was a blessing that she took my piece since I was so close to the wedding and had almost given up hope of my idea coming to fruition.

I acquired this crown just a few months before my wedding! My aunt was getting rid of some things and asked the cousins if anyone wanted the crown. I said yes with the intention of redoing it myself (I’m so happy I didn’t even try!).
I had no idea the flowers were wax, or that wax flowers were even a thing. Marie really opened my eyes to how wonderful the crown was.

The wax flower crown was worn by her grandmother in 1954. Amazingly, no other family member has worn it since..

I have restyled many wax flower crowns. They exude incredible beauty when repurposed into delicate bridal accessories.

Wax flower orange blossoms are the most common type of flowers I see. I love to see a piece that has additional wax elements. Robyn’s crown had three larger petal florals with a lightly washed green hue, making them especially beautiful to use as the focal point for her headpiece.

All I had envisioned was a few flowers glued together onto a clip, and it ended up being way more than that.

For our wedding, we really wanted to keep things low-key and true to who we are as a couple. My husband and I are both nurses, and we tend to give all our energy to those in need, so we are pretty protective of where we invest our time and effort. We wanted our wedding to feel like us—simple, intimate, and without the stress or sense of obligation.

We’ve always loved the elopement vibe. We love the big trees in California and wanted to be surrounded by them for our elopement. Muir Woods National Monument was just one and a half hours away from where we live, with tons of big redwoods.
We eloped in the woods, just the two of us and four family members: my mom, dad, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, who was our officiant. It was important to us to have the people we truly wanted by our side, not out of any obligation, but because we loved them and wanted them there.

Robyn surprised her mom and sister-in-law with wax flower hairpins designed from their family heirloom wax flower crown.

As for my wedding day vibe, it was relaxed but still polished. I love the boho-chic look, so I wore a lace dress. To give you an idea of how chill we are, I forgot my wedding shoes and ended up getting married in Vans! It was really about being comfortable and staying true to ourselves while celebrating our love in a way that felt right for us.
I was obsessed with my wax flowers! It was even more than I had envisioned. I had no idea what I was getting into, but Marie’s work meant the world.
Being chill and laidback allows me to give creative freedom to the experts. I trusted Marie’s skill and judgment in all of this.

More wax flower crowns await beautiful transformations at the shop for a new generation of love and wedding tales.

See you next month on the Fourteenth
